The motto of the Foundation — Preserve the Heritage…Educate the Future — summarizes its mission. The Foundation seeks to educate future Americans to fully appreciate the sacrifices that generations of American soldiers have made to safeguard the freedoms of this nation.
The Foundation is not a governmental agency. It depends on funds from memberships, donations, and grants for support.
Originally established in 1977 as the Retired Army Nurse Corps Association, ANCA is a voluntary organization of, by, and for United States Army Nurse Corps officers. ANCA is dedicated to bringing Army nurses together in a social setting and supporting the goals of the Corps.
The legacy of Business and Professional Women’s (BPW) Foundation (www.BPWFoundation.org) began in 1919, with the mission of strengthening the capacity of organizations and businesses to create work environments that are inclusive and value the skills and contributions of working women. In 1956, BPW/USA became the first foundation dedicated to conducting research, analyzing results, and providing information with a single-minded focus on working women. Today, BPW Foundation is a 501(c)(3) research and education organization with a grassroots constituent base of over 55,000 that is transforming workplaces for both women and employers by partnering to create successful workplaces that embrace and practice diversity, equity, and work-life balance. Through BPW Foundation’s groundbreaking research and in our unique role as convener, we team employers, working women, and policymakers to collaborate and promote systemic change in the workplace.
BPW Foundation’s focus on women veterans began nearly a decade ago with a study of transition experiences of women following their military service. Following this, BPW Foundation convened the inaugural 2010 Joining Forces for Women Veterans Summit, which provided a visible platform and ramework to address the distinct challenges women veterans face when they return to civilian life and reinforced the overwhelming need for employment and career reintegration services and support for our nation’s military women.
In January, 2012, BPW Foundation launched Joining Forces for Women Veterans and Military Spouses Mentoring Plus™, a high tech-high touch mentoring structure to support women veterans and military/veteran spouses of all ages and all ranks—across all geography—as they struggle to translate their skills and find success in the civilian workplace. Joining Forces Mentoring Plus, a component of the White House Joining Forces project, will initially connect a projected 10,000 women veterans and military spouses with volunteer working women mentors toward a longer-term goal of 100,000 mentor-mentee relationships. The museum and education center honors the U.S. Army’s first officer candidate class for African American men in 1917, and the establishment of the first Women’s Army Auxilary Corps (WAAC’s) in 1942. Visit their website to find out more information.

Helmets to Hardhats is a national, nonprofit program that connects National Guard, Reserve, retired and transitioning active-duty military service members with skilled training and quality career opportunities in the construction industry. The program is designed to help military service members successfully transition back into civilian life by offering them the means to secure a quality career in the construction industry.
Helmets to Hardhats acts as an advocate on behalf of military service members who are interested in working for the trades, corporations and associations that comprise the U.S. construction industry. Once registered, program users can access information and opportunities on over 80 different apprenticeable crafts. The NVTC Veterans Employment Initiative is a new program to connect veterans to employment opportunities within Virginia’s technology community. Through this initiative, NVTC will provide tools and resources to match veterans with jobs, internships, mentorships and certifications, while also providing support to member companies in their efforts to hire, train and retain qualified veteran employees. In tandem, NVTC is collaborating with state and federal policymakers to expedite legislative and/or regulatory action that enhances companies’ ability to hire and train veterans on any federal contract.

In November 1994, Public Law 103-446 established the Center for Women to monitor and coordinate VA’s administration of health care and benefits services and programs for women Veterans. The Center serves as an advocate for a cultural transformation (both within VA and in the general public) in recognizing the service and contributions of women Veterans and women in the military, and in raising awareness of the responsibility to treat women Veterans with dignity and respect.
The Women In Military Service For America Memorial, at the Ceremonial Entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, is the only major national memorial honoring all women who have defended America throughout history. Their patriotism and bravery are a part of our nation’s heritage and are now recognized. Visitors to the Women’s Memorial experience the collective history of women in the military along with the individual stories of registered servicewomen.
Armed with some of the most talented women veterans on our team, through our diligent advocacy efforts, research, policy engagement, networking, collaborations, community support, and peer to peer interaction, WVI is dedicated to addressing the needs of women veterans.
